PC Settings, introduced first with Windows 8, has been rebranded as Settings in Windows 10. Microsoft has completely overhauled the Settings app to make it easier to use and include new settings.
While the classic Control Panel is still exist in Windows 10 and we need to navigate to the Control Panel to access some settings, most of the Settings can be found under Settings app. In fact, many of the newly added settings and options are available only in the Settings app.
Settings to personalize the Start menu or screen, lock screen and many other options are available in Settings app only. Additionally, the Settings app allows you pin your favorite settings or settings that you need to access very often to the Start menu or screen.
The design language of the Settings app goes very well with overall design of Windows 10. All settings and options have been placed into nine different categories: System, Devices, Network and Internet, Personalization, Accounts, Time and Language, Ease of Access, Privacy and Update and security. Navigate to category to view sub-categories.
In fact, in many ways, the Settings app is much easier to use and navigate than the classic Control Panel.

You're working with your computer and a notification pops up on your screen. The little box rises to tell you about a calendar reminder, or that you have a received email message or software updates ready.
We computer users have mixed feelings about those Windows notifications. On one hand, they can bring information to keep you productive. On the other hand, their arrival often can be distracting, and sometimes they disappear before we can read or act on its information.
The action center in Windows 10 gives you one location to more easily manage and respond to your notifications. The action center collects notifications and alerts that come to you, so you can find them at a time when you can give them appropriate attention.
This is a great way to be more productive and efficient when using Windows, as you can quickly catch up on items you may have missed and act on them. The action center also lets you turn some settings on or off in one quick stop. Let's walk through how to set up and work with the action center to best help you get information that’s important to you.
Find the action center
Open the action center with the action center icon at the bottom right-hand side of your taskbar. The icon as a white outline means no notifications are waiting for you, while a full white icon indicates the action center has pending items for you.
Click the icon to open action center for a view of all your notifications, new or old.
The notifications are categorized according to the application that sent them – for example, notifications from Mail are in one group, those from Windows Defender are grouped separately, those from Cortana in another group, and so on. Some may come with specific actions you can take. Otherwise, in action center you can dismiss or reply to any notification, or block that application from sending you any more notifications.
Control notifications or stop them altogether
Enable Action Center Windows 10
If you don’t want the distraction of notifications popping up on your screen, you can stop that from happening, or even turn off notifications from a particular app. Do this with the Notifications & actions setting. In the search box at the bottom left of your screen, type in “notifications” and select Notifications & actions or select the Settings app from the Start button and to go to System > Notifications & actions.
Under the Notifications heading, you can choose whether notifications can pop up on your screen while you’re working, or on the lock screen (where you sign in to your computer) when you’re not, and more. Note that even if you turn these off, the notifications will still appear for you in the action center.
If you scroll down to the Get notifications from these senders heading, you can choose to stop particular apps from sending you any more notifications. Alternatively, enable Focus Assist for distraction-free work time.
This screen shows you which applications can send notifications – those switched On will send you notifications as needed. To stop an app from sending you any more notifications, turn its switch to Off. This will stop any notifications from this app from appearing in your action center.
Put your quick actions in the action center
The action center also gives you access to some settings that you can turn on or off there. Called quick actions, these are at the bottom of the action center.
I usually manage features like connecting to a network, Bluetooth, and Night light all through quick actions. These actions are customizable, so if there are some features you may not use, or if you simply want to re-arrange them, you can do so. To start managing your quick actions, go to the Notifications & actions screen and look under the Quick actions heading.
To customize these quick actions, look under the box of quick actions and click Add or remove quick actions. Then turn On the switch to the actions you want on your action center and Off the switch to actions you don’t want.
Then, go back to the Notification & actions screen. Under Quick actions, to re-arrange the actions to the order you want, simply click and drag them around the box.
Once you have your chosen quick actions in order, open your action center any time you want to toggle one of them on or off!
Set up your action center
With these tips in mind, it’s now your turn to set up your Action center just the way you want it! Change your quick actions, setup and start managing your notifications today.

The Action Center in Windows 10 is a tool contained in Microsoft’s newest operating system. It allows fast access to some key commands and avoids the need to dig into Settings or Control Panel to perform some fundamental actions. As this is quite a useful feature, this tutorial will show you how to open Action Center in Windows 10 and what to do when you’re there

Action Center built on Charms from Windows 8 but makes them easier to live with and much more useful. Desktop users may not get quite so much value from it but mobile and laptop users certainly will. The ability to quickly turn a feature on or off with a swipe or mouse click has obvious potential.
Action Center is installed as standard in all Windows 10 editions but this being Microsoft, it will need a little tweaking to get it working properly.
How to open Action Center in Windows 10
Opening Action Center in Windows 10 is about as simple as it gets. Just tap or click on the little speech bubble icon to the right of the clock in the Taskbar. A vertical window should appear with notifications at the top and quick actions at the bottom. Click anything in this slider to read the notification or perform the action.
You can also use the shortcut Windows key + A to access Action Center in Windows 10.
If the speech bubble icon is empty, there are no notifications waiting for you. If the speech bubble has three lines in it that look like text, it means there is a notification waiting. If the bubble has a tiny quarter moon on the bottom right, it means you have Quiet hours turned on.
The exact actions you see in the slider depend on what device you’re using and how you have it set up. Desktop versions will differ from laptops unless you have a Wi-Fi card, Bluetooth or a touchscreen on your desktop.
How to configure Action Center in Windows 10
As I mentioned earlier, Action Center will need a little tweaking to tune it to your needs. By default, it has a habit of notifying you about absolutely everything and allows any installed app to pop up a notification. Most of us really aren’t going to want that so we can tune it a little.
- Open Action Center and select All Settings.
- Select System and Notifications & actions.
- Select the Add or remove quick actions text link in the right pane.
- Select what actions you want to appear on the lower half of the Action Center.
- Go back to Notifications & actions.
- Tweak Notifications to suit your needs.
I like to limit notifications to the apps I use. So will leave Get notifications… toggled on, turn off Show notifications on the lock screen, Hide notifications when I’m duplicating a screen and Get tips and tricks… That last one is essential. It turns off a lot of the more annoying Windows advertising.
- Open System and Notifications & actions if you closed it.
- Scroll down to Get notifications from these senders.
- Select the apps you are happy to notify you while using your device.
- Toggle off any you can to keep quiet.
You can also change priority of the messages you choose to receive in Action Center. This is useful if you allow lots of them on your device. For example, you can prioritize email and Facebook updates over security notifications or the other way round.
- Open System and Notifications & actions.
- Select one of the apps you get notifications from and click it.
- Scroll down to Priority of notifications in Action Center.
- Select the priority you want to assign it and the number of notifications you are happy for it to display.
- Repeat for any app you want to modify.
Turn notifications on or off in Action Center
If you find Action Center notifications more of a hindrance than a help, you can turn them off.
- Open System and Notifications & actions.
- Toggle off, Get notifications from apps and other senders.
- You can also toggle off individual apps if you prefer under Get notifications from these senders.
If you find you miss things, just toggle the same setting(s) back on.
Disable Action Center in Windows 10
You can also disable Action Center as a whole should you want to work or play without being distracted. You will need to change a registry setting so make a backup of your registry before making any changes. Then:
- Press Windows key + R, type regedit and hit Enter.
- Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsExplorer.
- Right click the Explorer file on the left, select New, DWORD (32-bit) Value and call it DisableNotificationCenter. Give it a value of 1.
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsExplorer.
- Right click the Explorer file, select New, DWORD (32-bit) Value and call it DisableNotificationCenter. Give it a value of 1.
Again, if you find you miss it, just change these two values to 0 to disable them.
